What is a time of flight (TOF) sensor?

A Time of Flight (ToF) sensor, also called a ToF camera, is a specialized sensor that measures the depth or distance to an object by emitting an infrared beam of light and measuring the time it returns. Hence the name, Time of Flight.

What is a time of flight sensor?

The Time of Flight sensor is able to capture depth information for every pixel in the image captured. It is mainly used for machine vision applications and advantages include the sensor’s compact construction, its relative ease-of-use, a precise accuracy of approximately 1cm, and high frame rates.

What are the advantages of using a time of flight sensor?

No worries as here are some advantages to using a ToF sensor: Compared to other distance sensors like ultrasonic or laser, Time of flight sensors is able to compose a 3D image of a scene very quickly. For example, ToF cameras are able to do that in just one shot.
